Important FAQ’s

Indoor Environmental Quality or IEQ is most simply described as the conditions inside the building. It includes air quality, but also access to daylight and views, pleasant acoustic conditions, and occupant control over lighting and thermal comfort.

We are used to thinking about how the outdoor environment affects us, but many people are unfamiliar with the importance of our indoor environment – even though it is where we spend 90% of our time. Indoor environmental quality (IEQ) encompasses all of the physical characteristics related to indoor environments which can affect our health, well-being, and performance – including, but not limited to, air quality, thermal comfort, acoustics, light, and access to nature views. Throughout our lives, our physical and social environments – such as neighborhoods, buildings, and behaviors within them – have a greater impact on our health than our access to and quality of health care. Let’s learn more about the key dimensions of IEQ and how IEQ can impact us.

Understanding your sources of Environmental contaminants is the first step. This allows you to prevent or resolve any issue due to these contaminants. Here are some common sources of air contaminants for most buildings:

  • Pollutants tracked in on people’s shoes or from specific processes (i.e. labs/factories).
  • People’s respiration, which can increase carbon dioxide levels and/or introduce germs.
  • Methane or radon gasses coming from the soil underneath the building.
  • People smoking out near building entrances or air uptakes.
  • Building materials that may emit VOCs (volatile organic compounds).
  • Combustion processes in HVAC equipment, vehicles in or near the building, and fireplaces/stoves.
  • Growth of mold resulting from high moisture and humidity in the building.
  • Cleaning materials or other potential chemicals used inside.

Yes.

WHO recognizes that in special situations such as in healthcare facilities, the COVID-19 virus can be transmitted by air currents. Therefore, following the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principle, it is important to minimize such a risk. In such cases, the HVAC system for the ICUs and other areas of the hospital where COVID-19 patients are present can help to vent all air pollutants, including the virus. This can be accomplished through the ventilation of close common spaces with outdoor air and air filtration, i.e. through achieving and maintaining an elevated Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) by use of the HVAC system.

The ways of managing an HVAC system to reduce the risk as much as possible at the same time to reduce the airborne levels of COVID-19 as low as reasonably achievable can be quite different depending on the system’s file user and the typology of the duct layout. Thus, you have to refer to the specific system applications and typology. What is common to reduce the risk is the goal: to provide as much as possible outdoor air to dilute and remove through the exhaust air vents any possible SARS-CoV2-19 virus exhaled by an asymptomatic person present in the space or room serviced by the HVAC system. This includes sufficient and effective ventilation, possibly enhanced by particle filtration and air disinfection, avoidance of air recirculation, and avoiding overcrowding.
